Preparing
Your Site for
SEO
Search engine optimization starts right at the heart of your
website. Some of the most basic things that you need to do are
things that many web designers often times neglect.
Here are a few quick tips for
basic SEO.
1. Make sure your title tags are properly named. The most
common mistake I see in title tags is using the URL of the
website. If your site has www.mysite.com in the title tag, it's
time to change it.
What makes up a good title
tag?
Think about your business. Now think about how you want
people to find your business online. If you are a dog trainer
and you live in Redding, your title tag should read, "Dog
Training Redding". It's short and to the point. Most
importantly, it's probably something people would actually type
into the search engines if they live in Redding and are looking
for a dog trainer.
2. Every page on your site should have a different title
tag. Take a walk through this site and look at a variety of
article pages. You will notice that each page has a different
title tag.
This is another very common mistake that can easily be
corrected. Changing the title tag to keywords that relate to
your content and are used by people to find your type of
business can make a huge difference.
In fact without proper title tags the search engines may not
have a clue what your business is.
3. Make sure the content on your site includes the keywords
used in your title tags.
If you are a dog trainer and you want people in your area to
find you, make sure you add this into your content.
"My name is Mary and I am a dog trainer in Redding, CA. I
also train dogs in Anderson and ... etc..."
That sentence helps the search engines to list your site for
keyword search terms that include where you train dogs.
Just using these three basic SEO tips can help improve your
search engine listing tremendously.
There is more to obtaining a great search engine listing
than these three tips. It is also vital to include other
elements that are applied both onsite and offsite.
